I read the following line in an article about the new Facebook IPO, “People familiar with Mr. Zuckerberg’s thinking said he has long been fearful of the damage an IPO could do to the company’s culture. He wants employees focused on making great products, not the stock price, they said.”

Companies should be focused on making great products/services. Companies should be focused on building something great. It’s really too bad most US based companies don’t subscribe to this and only strive to make a quick buck and/or maximize shareholder wealth. It’s high time companies, and investors, start thinking long term.

Last week Google announced a pretty significant change to their privacy agreement, that in many respects I believe has flown under the radar. Google will now be collecting and unifying all its user data across all of its web offerings. That means that Google will be expanding the degree, and intricacy, to which it collects data about me. In other words the profile that Google is building about me will be MUCH larger and MORE detailed.

I’m not naive enough to think that Google wasn’t doing this prior to this change. What has me concerned is the level they will be going build my profile. What will Google be doing with this data? Better search results that are tailored to my preferences? I’m not a tin foil hat guy but you’ll have to excuse me if I’m a little skeptical and less than enthused about this.

This move, along with other missteps by Google, has me seriously questioning their company philosophy of ‘do no evil’.
